A couple years ago I started an art and design blog called Ideas We Forgot. I remember feeling like I’d lost my way over the years, like I needed to reconnect with creative aspects of myself that I’d become distant from. The name was lifted from an album I was listening to at the moment (Toe’s Songs, Ideas We Forgot), but meant to be more vague and open-ended than any kind of literal homage or reference. It seemed to fit and I’m generally pretty bad at naming things so I just rolled with it. “Ideas We Forgot To Steal” was initially just an off-handed joke made by my friend James, but for some reason it stuck. I even attempted to use the name for another blog focusing on other creative people I admired, but I had enough trouble as it was updating the first blog and so that idea didn’t pan out. But I held onto the name, and when I neglected to re-register ideasweforgot.com the next year and GoDaddy began their automated process of auctioning it off for profit, I took advantage of the seemingly-perfect situation and the blog was re-titled Ideas We Forgot To Steal. I always preferred the idea of someone else naming you over the vanity of naming yourself, and it was only fitting considering my friends were the ones who inspired me to start a blog to begin with. So with that in mind, my hope with Ideas We Forgot To Steal is to give back some of that inspiration I always took for granted. ◊
